TECHNIQUES

  • Routes Interiors Handmade Homeware traditional loom Mexico

    Backstrap loom

Pre-hispanic in its origin and typically practised by women amongst mayan communities. The bottom of the back strap loom is attached around the weavers waist, limiting the width of the fabric, whilst the top is commonly attached to a post or a tree. The women use their body to create the desired tension. They then pass the threads in and out of the warp to create beautiful and intricate fabrics. This technique of weaving to the size desired means that there is no waste produced in the process.

    Flying Shuttle Loom

This is more automated than a traditional pedal loom. A cord is pulled which then flies a shuttle through the weft of the fabric creating the required design.

    Pedal Loom

This apparatus consists of a wooden frame that is operated by hand. It takes 4-5 people up to one day to set up a loom. Each thread in the warp must be counted one by one according to the design. The operator then guides the weave by pressing down on pedals controlling which threads are passed through the weft. The pedal loom is generally used to produce larger pieces and is typically operated by men.

  • Routes Interiors Handmade Homeware hand embroidery Mexico

    Hand Embroidery

The makers hands are used to intentionally craft the design stitch by stitch to the surface of the cloth. It requires lots of precision, skill and attention to detail to create such artistry. The mayan regions typically use cross stitch, the scapular stitch, the basting stitch, chain stitch and blanket stitch.

  • Routes Interiors Handmade Homeware natural dyes Mexico

    Natural Dyes

Working in alignment with nature and in harmony with the seasons, a selection of our products are hand dyed using plant based dyes which have been foraged locally. From marigolds to cochinea, this process of dyeing produces non toxic dye baths which nourish the land once finished with. Just like everything in nature, each dye bath is unique creating slight but beautiful variations in colour.
